Free is good
Let’s face it – we all love free. After
all, my favorite food is free food! (And
free food has no calories!)
Free music is good, too. While there are
great shows at places like Madison Square
Garden and B B King’s Club, they cost a lot
of money. There are a wide range of free
concerts available throughout the city,
especially during the summer, that offer a
terrific return on investment.
When you are paying $35 for a ticket, you
have high expectations for that show. You
may only be willing to spend that money on
an artist that you already know and love,
and may be less willing to take a chance on
an unknown artist or a different kind of
music.
Free concerts remove the expectations and
pressure. You can take a chance on an
unfamiliar artist or different music,
because you have nothing to lose. In doing
so, you open yourself up to new experiences
and lead you to artists and music that you
would have never otherwise enjoyed.
Let’s face it, the Rolling Stones are not
playing Celebrate Brooklyn. But I have seen
many great artists there and at other free
venues over the years. The artists may not
be big headliners to the uninformed, but you
can often find some of the best artists in
genres such as blues, gospel, zydeco and
folk. I know I have seen many
Grammy-winning artists at free concerts.
So,
enjoy some of the
best free music that New
York has to offer!
